The KFC Burnout Competition is one of the highlights of Motorvation and for the 30th running of Western Australia’s biggest street machine festival, the entries are of the hot and spicy variety.
Chad Douglas in 2MENTAL has one of the most instantly recognisable cars in WA’s burnout scene, with twin turbochargers tearing through the bonnet of his Holden ute.
Douglas said he was one of the pioneers of turbocharging for burnouts in WA.
“It was the first V8 turbo skid car in WA if not Australia and one of the first L98 retrofits in WA,” he said. “It is completely owner built except the aluminium tanks and pipework.”
While the ute’s airbrushed green flames have been very familiar, Douglas said something new is in the works for Motorvation 30.
“I’ve just completed a colour scheme change to something unlike most others out there,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting a couple of sets of tyres off and having a few refreshments with mates.
“With the new overall theme of the show and being the 30th it should be the biggest to date.”
While Cliff Brockwell has a more traditional powerplant, he has put it into a less than traditional burnout machine. Indeed he has built one of the Frankensteins of the burnout scene, taking parts from a variety of marques to make one heck of a skid monster.
It’s a Mercedes on the outside but the rear chassis rebuild has seen a Holden one tonner chassis sacrificed and set in place. Under the bonnet is diametrically opposed with a Ford 521 attached to a T400 Holden gearbox.
Such a wild machine is difficult to keep tamed for the street and so Brockwell is looking forward to giving his family a chance to experience the car on the Smooth Cruise.
“I’m keen to cruise the car with the family as the skid pad is not the place for my young boys but they love it and always want more time in the car so it’s great to get that chance,” he said.
“The time spent with like minded enthusiasts is a great opportunity to zone out of life’s worries and have some care free time which is very good for my health!”
When the KFC Burnout Competition rolls around, Brockwell said he wants to be up there with the contenders and he believes history is on his side.
“I’m keen to give the skids a good crack as we won the burnouts at Motorvation 20 and figured to win Motorvation 30 would be a good goal and awesome personal achievement after being away for a while to start a family,” he said. “Now having the new car ready to go I’d be mad not to have a crack at it.”
