Top Comp has long been one of Western Australia’s favourite local brackets and the variety of cars being put in front of spectators continues to impress.

At this weekend’s Washpod WA Drag Racing Championships, fans will see both fresh faces and old favourites competing.

Recently out for the first time in competition was Sharon Sheehan’s stunning CC/Dragster. The Medusa-themed airbrushing is really worth a close look at in the pits as are the many other details on this six second rail.

The dragster is just a few runs old but is already only about a tenth of a second off the national record, before the team has even begun to lean on it.

Sheehan, who raced in Modified previously and is married to Top Fuel and Funny Car racer Mark Sheehan, said the car behaved exactly as it was supposed to.

“Everything went perfectly, thank God,” she said. “I pulled off a 6.85 second pass and hit the 300kmh mark which was very exciting.

“I threw a blower belt on my last run, right on the finish line. It would have been nice to be on the podium on my first meeting in that car.

“This meeting the plan is to crank it up a bit, ‘make it go faster.’ They’re Mark’s words – I wouldn’t expect anything less from him.”

At the other end of the spectrum in many ways is Al McClure. He is a seasoned veteran of Top Comp and instead of a long wheelbase dragster he has gone for a short wheelbase BB/Altered.

And instead of a flash paint scheme, he went for a DIY patina look that is certainly unique. It might have a rust-bucket look, however the performance is anything but.

“I was excited to have the altered back out having done numerous engine upgrades and the expectation of some fast times,” he said.

And fast times quickly came for McClure, starting with a 6.33 and ending up on a 6.24 by the end of the evening at the Grand Opening. McClure sees potential for more.

“Inspecting the car after the run we found the right (exhaust) header was hanging off the engine and had to pull seven of the eight bolts out. We found two cylinders had gone away at five seconds into the run due to the header coming off so are confident of even more from the car.

“In the final the car steered hard to the wall and after a few pedals I decided to abort the run and fight another day but we are very happy and confident that our race car will be strong this season.”

The Washpod WA Drag Racing Championships see sportsman qualifying from 11am with the feature program from 6pm.
