The Priolo family name is proving hard to shake from the upper echelons of WA Sprintcar racing, with Andrew Priolo the most recent in the dynasty to make his mark.

Following in the footsteps of father Pino and brother David, Andrew first appeared on a Sprintcar podium at Perth Motorplex two years ago, and he has since racked up several more. His first victory could be just around the corner, if his form at the Scardifields Smash Repairs King of Wings recently was anything to go by.

Priolo said his team had taken the time to come in prepared, rather than rushing to be at the season opener. The approach seems to have paid off, with a third place for Priolo at his first event of the season.

“We decided to miss the first couple of nights (of the season), our cars were a little bit later than what they were meant to be,” Priolo said. “We are more prepared than we have ever been. There is no point coming (to events) when you are not ready.”

WA Sprintcar Championship on Saturday, December 8 is building into an unmissable event for fans, where Priolo will need to find that little bit extra to run with the likes of superstars Kerry Madsen and James McFadden and local hotshots Jamie Maiolo and Jason Kendrick.

“To be honest I need to train harder,” he said. “I haven’t been in the car in seven months. Tiny mistakes don’t take much to mess it all up. I’ve been saying from day one I want to earn a win, I don’t want to be given it.

“The fitness side of racing is so important and even more important is controlling your breathing through these long intense races up on the wall. I have been continuing my boxing and running as I was before and just trying to push that bit harder.

“We know that we have the car speed to get the job done. The biggest key is starting up front and being able to attack every lap. I am trying to work on my consistency in the car and minimise driver mistakes which you just can’t make to be able to win races.”

The Priolo family knows how to get the job done, with David Priolo a former Sprintcar State Champion. Andrew would love to match that prestigious honour.

“It would be very special if the title came as my first Sprintcar win; it would defiantly be one to remember,” Andrew said. “The fact the my brother David is my crew chief now would make it that extra bit special.

“We have not planned to change anything as we have a really good base point now.

WA Sprintcar Title takes place as part of a massive double header for Perth Motorplex, with the John Day Classic for Speedcars also running this Saturday.

Heats begin from 5pm with the main show commencing from 6pm.
